Climate Control and Thermal Management: Cabin Comfort and Engine Heat Balance
In automotive engineering, climate control is more than a system that cools the car in summer and heats it in winter. In modern VW Group engines, the air conditioning compressor, the intercooler cooling loop and the engine coolant circuit work together as one integrated thermal management system. Even a small pressure drop or blockage in the cooling system can cause the engine to overheat, degrade the transmission fluid and significantly increase fuel consumption.
Precise Refrigerant Charging and Advanced Leak Detection
The Vosgen climate team works with fully automatic charging stations and environmentally friendly technology:
- Refrigerant charging to the gram (R134a and R1234yf): Refrigerant is never added by guesswork or by reading a gauge. The system is charged with exactly the amount shown on the factory label under the bonnet (to within ±5 g), together with synthetic compressor oil. The charging protocols for the new, more eco-friendly R1234yf refrigerant are followed in full.
- Dry nitrogen and UV dye leak testing: A system that is losing refrigerant is never recharged before the leak is found. The circuit is tested with high-pressure dry nitrogen, micro-cracks are located with UV dye under ultraviolet light, and leaks from the condenser or lines are sealed.
Thermal Circuit and Mechanical Component Maintenance
1. Variable-Displacement Compressor Repair
Clutch faults, blocked solenoid valves and housing leaks on the variable-displacement (valve-controlled) compressors used in VW Group vehicles are repaired with original parts. If a compressor seizes, the entire line is chemically flushed to remove metal debris.
2. Dual Thermostats and Electronic Coolant Circulation
Variable water pumps, electronic thermostat housings and heater flap motors on TSI and TDI engines are checked to keep the engine at its ideal operating temperature.
3. Evaporator Hygiene and Ozone Sterilisation
To stop the damp, musty smell that fills the cabin when the air conditioning is switched on, the evaporator surfaces are cleaned with antibacterial solutions and the cabin is treated with an ozone generator to remove microorganisms, leaving healthy, clean air.
